How is erythrocytosis classified?

  • Absolute erythrocytosis (elevated red blood cell mass)
    • Primary – cause is intrinsic to the red blood cell
    • Secondary – cause is extrinsic to the red blood cell
  • Apparent or relative erythrocytosis (reduced plasma volume relative to red blood cell mass).
