Can I test for lupus anticoagulant (LA) in a patient taking an anticoagulant?

By William Aird

Anticoagulant therapy is a major confounding factor in LA testing, because it may prolong the clotting times in the PL-dependent assays used for LA detection, leading to false positive results. False negative results may also occur. Ideally, LA testing should be deferred until anticoagulation is discontinued.
