What are the most common causes of transient neutropenia?

  • Infections
    • Viral infections (most common cause)
      • HIV
      • Cytomegalovirus
      • EBV
      • HPV6
      • Parainfluenza virus
      • Parvovirus B19
    • Bacterial infections, especially in cases of:
      • Overwhelming infection (sepsis)
      • Salmonella
      • Brucellosis
    • Malaria
  • Certain drugs – can occur at any time during treatment; most common culprits include:
    • Chemotherapy agents
    • Antiepileptics (e.g. valproate, carbamazepine)
    • Antipsychotics (e.g. clozapine)
    • Anti-thyroid drugs
    • Antibiotics
    • Anti-inflammatory drugs
