How is anemia of inflammation defined?

Anemia of inflammation (AI, formerly also called anemia of chronic disease or anemia of chronic disorders) is usually a mild to moderately severe anemia (hemoglobin rarely lower than 8 g/dL, typically normocytic, normochromic) that develops in the setting of infection, inflammatory disease, or malignancy and is associated with cytokine-mediated iron sequestration and reduced erythropoiesis.
