Iron Costs Associated with Lactation

By William Aird

  • I posted a poll on Twitter, asking whether lactation or mensuration is associated with higher daily iron requirements. Most answered that lactation is associated with higher requirements than menstruation. The correct answer was menstruation!
  • However, note that 75% of lactating women are amenorrhoeic, and the Fe content of milk is very low (though the iron content of breast milk is not influenced by changes in maternal iron status, such as through maternal supplementation).
Per the NIH, the recommended dietary allowance for iron during lactation is actually 9 mg, rather than the 14 mg calculated here. These differences notwithstanding, iron requirements are lower during lactation than with menstruation.
