This fresco, commissioned by Pope Julius 11, represents Ancient Greek philosophers, mathematicians and scientists. Plato and his pupil Aristotle are portrayed at the centre. Many of the portraits also doubled as contemporary portraits, as for example Leonardo da Vinci as Plato at the centre, and a self-portrait of Raphael looking out at us on the extreme right of the fresco. One of the main themes of the work was the rebirth of Ancient Greek thought during the Renaissance.

Note: The thumbnail image is The School of Athens ( 1509-1511) by Raphael (1483-1520), Vatican Museums, Rome.
