History

One red blood cell unit (RBC) is requested for a 51-year-old Caucasian woman admitted for elective hip replacement. Her past medical history includes ischemic cardiomyopathy, diabetes mellitus type II and iron deficiency anemia. She has no known allergies. She was transfused in the past with one RBC unit during a complicated C section at the age of 28. She has three children and no history of abortions and transplantation.1
