Rare Bleeding Disorders

Rare bleeding disorders collectively affect millions of people worldwide, yet each individual disorder remains uncommon enough to challenge diagnostic recognition.

Understanding RBDs requires moving beyond isolated disease knowledge to develop systematic clinical reasoning: recognizing bleeding phenotypes, understanding pathophysiology across diverse mechanisms, and navigating diagnosis when presentation doesn’t fit familiar patterns.

Medical trainees encounter RBDs sporadically across rotations. A patient presents with mucosal bleeding but normal platelet count and function. Another with joint hemorrhages after minor trauma. A third with postpartum hemorrhage despite normal coagulation studies. Each could reflect a distinct underlying defect in platelet biology, coagulation factor production, or fibrinolysis. Mastering RBDs means learning to work backward from bleeding presentation to suspected diagnosis, understanding the physiologic defect that explains the phenotype, and tailoring investigation and treatment to the specific disorder.
