What is the mechanism of massive hemolysis in C. perfringens septicemia?

By William Aird

Induced by C. perfringens-derived alpha-toxin. Alpha-toxin can damage the structural integrity of the red cell membrane by means of phospholipase activity, leading to microspherocytosis and subsequent hemolysis. Alpha-toxin is also the primary virulence factor by inducing gas gangrene (or clostridial myonecrosis) in C. perfringens infection.
